Rose and Todd Cranson, tuba players in their spare time, are using their creative spirits to make beer for others’ enjoyment. With their prime location beside the Arlington Lawn, the Superior Bathhouse Brewery & Distillery is looking forward to pleasing locals and tourists with their fare.
The Superior is the first brewery to be located inside a National Park. Located on Bathhouse Row in downtown Hot Springs, the building was once a bathhouse itself. In the past two years, the Cransons have slowly cut through the red tape to open their dream project.
Each step of the construction process had to be approved by the National Park Service, but for the Cransons, it was a dream worth waiting for. However, in honor of the time it took to open the first phase of the Superior Bathhouse Brewery & Distillery, the first beer brewed on the premises will be called Red Tape Red Ale. Each glass will come with a red ribbon wrapped around the glass.
Right now, the owners have opened the tasting room and restaurant. Their custom built beer taps feature a variety of brews, some of which are made directly in Arkansas. The Cransons aim to use as much local produce as possible in their restaurant, where they offer pub fare to accompany the beer.
The brewery is opening in phases as construction continues, but this fall the Superior is hoping to begin brewing their own beer on site. It will be the world’s first brewery or distillery to use thermal spring water as the main ingredient. The naturally hot springs flowing under downtown will also help them stay energy efficient.
If you’d like to get a taste of the brewing process and view the historic bathhouse, you can also enjoy one of the weekly tours of the building. Afterwards, you can drink a beer while looking out the 75 feet of windows in their sun porch. It would be a refreshing treat to add to a stay at Lookout Point.
