Mystic Creatures at Garvan Gardens :: Hot Springs Attraction

July 12th, 2015 by Ray Rosset

Last year I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Mystic Creatures topiary structures at Garvan Woodlands Gardens. The topiaries are large in scale and it boggles my brain trying to determine how in the world the artists came up with the ideas for each structure and how they carried them out with plants. Each display is made of thousands of brightly colored annuals planted in intricate patterns on steel forms covered with netting and soil.
Move forward to this summer and the Mystic Creatures: Topiary Art Takes Flight is even bigger and better than last year and is available through Aug. 31. This is an exhibit that brings out the child in all of us.
I think my favorite of the six topiary creations is Sea Serpent. He’s just magnificent. I spent quite a while marveling at his size and his shape, but also his impish persona.

You really must see this magical mystical creature. Even though the Sea Serpent is my favorite, I also was thoroughly entertained by the other five Mystic Creatures which include:
• 30-foot tall Sasquatch
• Fairy Gourdmother Playhouse
• Family of Marching Mushrooms
• Village of Fairies
• 20-foot wide “flaming” Phoenix
So, while vacationing in Hot Springs, an absolute must is to spend some time at Garvan Gardens with the Mystic Creatures. They are guaranteed to make your trip worthwhile. While you’re in Hot Springs, please also consider staying at the Inn to round out your visit.
During the summer months, it’s quite warm outside. So, enjoy the outdoors and then come to our Arkansas bed and breakfast to spend your quiet, cooler evenings with us. Situated on Lake Hamilton, each room has a view of the lake; most have either balconies or patios. We prepare a wonderful gourmet breakfast fit for a queen or king, luxuriously comfortable beds and linens and beautifully appointed rooms. Part of the charm of staying at a bed and breakfast involves spending time visiting with other guests at the Inn– however the inn is plenty spacious so that you may enjoy as much privacy as you desire.

Where are Hiking Trails in Hot Springs AR?

June 26th, 2014 by Kristie Rosset

My exercise of choice is walking so taking a guided hike in Hot Springs National Park with a park ranger is a treat I enjoy as often as I can. We are fortunate that the north end of the city is included in Hot Springs National Park.

Hot Springs National ParkOne of the many advantages of visiting Hot Springs is the availability of a myriad of hiking trails in the National Park. As a result we have park rangers who are very knowledgeable about the area and plan guided park hikes for Saturday mornings year around. In the summer the hikes are extended from Wednesday through Saturday.

The hikes led by park rangers take place 9 a.m.- noon on one of the trails in the Park. Those wanting to participate in a guided hike meet in front of Fordyce Bathhouse in the middle of Bathhouse Row at 9 a.m. The guided park hikes begin June 11 and continue throughout the summer. Dogs are welcome on hikes also as long as they are on a leash and as long as their owners clean up after them.

Some of the health benefits from walking in a forested setting include boosting mood, reducing stress, lowering blood pressure, increasing vitamin D levels, improving the ability to concentrate, improving physical health, and, in children, reducing symptoms associated with ADHD.

The National Park has 26 miles of trails with easy access. So when you come to town for a visit remember to bring your athletic shoes, water bottle and some sun screen and plan to take in a guided tour on one of the trails. For more information on the hikes, go online to www.nps.gov/hosp or call 501.620.6715

And, when you’re planning your vacation to Hot Springs, we’d love to have you stay with us at Lookout Point Inn. We’re tucked away on Lake Hamilton in a beautiful setting with a flowering garden and labyrinth near the water. All our rooms are extremely comfortable, with luxurious beds and a gorgeous view of the lake. Our breakfasts are by far the best in Hot Springs. We offer an opportunity to relax, rejuvenate and enjoy nature. Make reservations online or give us a call at 501.525.6155 and we’ll help you plan a fun trip to Hot Springs including a guided park hike.

Where to See Fireworks in Hot Springs, AR

June 3rd, 2014 by Kristie Rosset

July 4th Fireworks in Hot Springs ARThe 4th of July is truly a celebration in Hot Springs AR, with firework displays lighting up the sky in various locations throughout the area. Magic Springs, for example, is illuminating the evening in celebration all month, as well as on the 4th.

Spa Blast at Oaklawn Racing Track always draws a large crowd. This year it will begin at 5:30pm on July 3. Spa Blast really focuses on creating a family-friendly environment, with inflatable rides and reasonably-priced concessions. There will also be live music from the country group Downday early in the evening. Typically the fireworks begin at dusk. You are welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets for relaxing, but no coolers will be allowed.

Closer to Lookout Point, there will be a stunning exhibit over Lake Hamilton that weekend. All the details are still being lined up, but the same company presented the Memorial Day fireworks recently, and they were beautiful. (The photo above is from a display presented at the same location.)

While you are in town for the holiday, consider adding a stay at our Hot Springs luxury lodging. You can enjoy swimming in Lake Hamilton off of our lake wall, row the canoe in the tranquil waters, or listen to the sound of the waterfall in the garden before spending the evening surrounded by light displays. You can reserve your stay online or call 501.525.6155 for more information.
