There’s usually a lull after the holidays when all the lights are put away, the gifts exchanged and we’re contemplating-but-not-following a New Year’s diet. Not in Hot Springs! We’re gearing up for the exciting live thoroughbred racing season starting Jan. 13 at Oaklawn Racing & Gaming.

Racing season runs 3-5 days each week and culminates April 15 with the Arkansas Derby. Check out the schedule, and plan a visit to the races!

Thoroughbred racing at Oaklawn goes back more than a century, beginning in 1905. The crowd for the first race on Feb. 24, 1905, included 3,000 fans. It was such a big event that the Hot Springs mayor declared a half-day holiday for the city.

Last year, Oaklawn’s Arkansas Derby winner, Creator, also won Belmont Stakes. In 2015 American Pharoah won the Arkansas Derby before becoming the triple crown winner in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes. Oaklawn continues to be a grade 1 racetrack with the top horses in the country racing here.

Fun at the OJC!

Every year our family and close friends plan several outings to Oaklawn. We enjoy watching the horse races from the Jockey Club indoors with delicious food, a comfortable atmosphere and a relaxed way to place bets on the horses. Viewing the horse races from the multi-story glass windows in addition to individual screens on each table, makes for a terrific day at Oaklawn.

Throughout January & February, you are invited to be our guests at the private Oaklawn Jockey Club, complimentary with a two-night stay at the inn.  Enjoy your own private table with video screen, great service, and awesome view from the elevated position of the Jockey Club. Appropriate attire required at the OJC, and we’ll fill you in with details before your trip.
